1. Start with pigeons of good quality.
Lot of fanciers buy expensive pigeons with nice pedigrees, however this is no guarantee for success. The truth is the variation of the quality within the flock is much larger than the variation between the different flocks. This means that the great names have lot of low value pigeons. On the other hand, less known lofts have many valuable pigeons without really knowing it, because many other factors hold them back from achieving their potential. In most of the cases, the loft itself, routines of the owner, feeding, health, and training is the cause of good or poor performance. So please, do NOT purchase any new expensive pigeons before you are sure ALL other weak points are fixed. Such as:
2. Build a good loft.
Many lofts are expensive, but not really good for the pigeons. Many lofts has wrong ventilation (like air valves near the floor) creating undesirable climate. Windows in the roof makes the loft too hot when sun. Many lofts are also badly furbished so the pigeons disturb each other. The density of pigeons in the loft also has a tendency to be too high, especially in the end of the summer.
3. See your pigeons twice a day.
The more you see the pigeons, the better. And I mean see. Observe. Gaze. Look. Listen. Smell. Scrutinize. Investigate. Take notes of details you may observe. Lot of fanciers look at their pigeons day long, but they don’t observe many useful details. How can you tell on the droppings if there are red mites on the pigeons? Have you seen some stuff on the walls in the nest boxes? What is it? There are hundreds of observations you can do every day. You have to be a detective every day. And you can find out how to improve.
4. Give quality food.
“You will become what you eat.” This counts for both pigeons and the owner. If you mainly eat hot dogs and drink coke, you will never become fit. You will probably slowly become sick. Feeding pigeons is actually not really difficult. Follow the recommendations from your supplier or other experts. A good quality grain mix, + minerals, salt, vegetables, grit and vitamins will normally do. During the breeding season, you may give some protein. Some grounded dry cat-feed will serve as a great source of extra protein. Fresh water twice daily is mandatory for successful results.
5. Select hard.
A major error most pigeon fanciers do is to breeding too few youngsters. One good couple of pigeons can produce up to 10 youngsters a year. As mentioned above, the variation within a flock is greater than the variation between flocks. Also the variation between youngsters from one couple is bigger the than the average variation between the different couple. However, there are couples producing average better offspring than others. When you have one couple producing good flyers, it is likely that this couple will produce more good flyers. The more offspring you get from the good parents, the larger is the chance that you will get one pigeon which outperform his/her parents and also outperform his/her best sibling. In plain text: the more offspring you can produce from the (few) best couple(s), the bigger the chance you will produce an outstanding winner.
6. Stay free from diseases.
Curing pigeons is not a good idea. At least not routinely. Not many people drink a bottle of penicillin or another medicine a day without a very good and specific reason. A much better practice is to have your pigeons checked by a veterinarian dedicated pigeons on a regular basis. Check out the most common diseases and treat properly. If given, the medicine must be given with an effective strength, frequency and duration. For instance, if you give Baytril at 200 mg/liter in all drinking water for 10 days, you will 99% for sure get rid of Salmonella. However, if you give 50 mg/liter in the drinking water during 5 days, you will only have 20% chance to get rid of Salmonella, and 80% chance to create Baytril resistance Salmonella bacteria, meaning that when Baytril has to be given later, it will not will be effective at all, even in the high doses. The best way to keep your pigeons disease free is the following:
1, Keep the loft very clean
2. Keep the feed tray, water tray and grit very clean.
3. Give all pigeons Citromed (a combination of citrus fruit extract and organic acids) in the drinking water, and clean the feet of the pigeons with the same stuff after return from flights, to avoid bacteria or viruses from the basket or from somewhere else to be carried into the loft and spread there
4. Give pigeons the plant extract Berimax for 10 days to take down trichomonas before the breeding season. This yellow pigment, traditionally used to dye fabrics yellow, appears to kill trichomonas slowly but safely. A treatment can also be given the young pigeons before they start racing.
7. Train your pigeons smart.
Young pigeons need to get the training “inn with a silver tea spoon”. You have to toss them individually from various directions and distances before they fly in flock. Most fanciers don’t have the time or patience for this. Without individual training they stick to the flock whatever direction they choose. When the pigeons are attached by a falcon and split up, the single untrained pigeon will be confused and loose lot of time before she get on track again. The individually trained pigeon will quicker feel confident to go on her own, the shortest way home (according to her own calculations).
